Head of Department - Spanish
The King's School, Tynemouth
Job Description – Head of the Spanish Department
An outstanding graduate is required for September 2010 to lead and manage the provision for Spanish, on the promotion of the present post holder.
At King’s all pupils study French in Years 7 – 9 and take up either Spanish or German from Year 8. When selecting GCSE options for Year 10, all pupils are required to take at least one Modern Foreign Language and may choose to take two. Spanish is a very popular option at GCSE and healthy numbers continue to take it to AS and A2 Level.
The Department uses the WJEC Syllabus. Results at GCSE are in the region of 95% A* - C, with 50% A* - A being achieved. At A-Level, results are outstanding with 100% A – E and 75% - 80% A – B grades being achieved each year.
The Department is staffed by two full-time subject specialists, one of whom is a native speaker. Most language teachers at King’s offer two languages (the second to GCSE at most) and all three Departments are assisted in their teaching by a language assistant recruited through the British Council. Language teaching takes place in spacious modern rooms fully equipped with interactive whiteboards and access is available to an ICT suite whenever required. The Department offers a strong extra-curricular programme with a Spanish club, language plays and regular study visits and pupil exchanges to Spain.
The person appointed will lead and manage the department’s provision throughout the Senior School. The School is committed to compulsory languages at KS4 and Spanish has grown considerably in popularity over the last few years. There is much scope to develop the department within a very supportive school environment. Applications should include a letter stating reasons for applying for the post, a full CV, the application form and the names addresses and telephone numbers of at least two referees.
Please note that The King’s School, Tynemouth applies the Governments’ Safer Recruitment Procedures which will include:
• Checking that the completed Application Form provides a continuous record from age 16 • Receiving two satisfactory referees, one of which must be from your current or most recent employer • Receiving a satisfactory medical report from our Occupational Health Advisor • Checking proof of identity and right to work in the UK • A Satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from CRB
